Gary’s father was a public school teacher for 30 years. Gary, his wife Colleen, and all three of his children, proudly attended Michigan public schools. Gary knows that a quality education is the bedrock of Michigan’s middle class. And Gary is ready to continue fighting for Michigan students of all ages in the U.S. Senate.
Michigan students need to be ready to compete in the 21st century global marketplace. Higher education is not only the key to their future, but the future of Michigan’s economy. Gary helped write the reauthorization of the America COMPETES Act, which makes landmark investments in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs. He is also fighting to protect early education programs like Head Start.
No young person in Michigan should be unable to pursue his or her dream of a higher education because of cost. That’s why Gary was a leader in the fight to keep student loan interest rates from doubling and stop the burden on our young people and their families from growing.
It is not enough for Michigan to create the jobs of tomorrow — we should also be training and educating our workforce to fill them. Michigan students of all ages can count on Gary to fight for them as an independent voice in the U.S. Senate.
