The Great Lakes watershed supports hundreds of thousands of jobs and contributes billions to Michigan’s economy. Gary has always made protecting the Great Lakes a top priority.
As a State Senator, Gary successfully led the fight to ban directional oil and gas drilling under our Great Lakes.
In Congress, Gary has been a strong supporter of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which invests in cleanup efforts and helps protect against the threat of invasive species like Asian Carp and algal blooms in Saginaw Bay.
After massive piles of petroleum coke, a byproduct from oil refining, were stored out in the open along the Detroit waterfront and were blowing into homes and businesses, Gary spearheaded efforts to protect small businesses, residents, and the Great Lakes watershed from contamination from pet coke dust and runoff. He is continuing to push for a federal study of the effects of pet coke on public health and the environment as well as best practice management for storing and handling pet coke so that Michigan families and businesses can get the answers they deserve.
Time and again, Gary has fought for clean air and clean water in Michigan communities. The Great Lakes and our environment are vital to the future of Michigan — and Gary is ready to defend them in the U.S. Senate.
