Small Business & Entrepreneurship
Gary was a successful businessman for more than 20 years, and he knows that small businesses are the engine of Michigan’s economy and key to building a strong middle class.
When greed on Wall Street put Michigan’s small businesses at risk, Gary took on the special interests to fight for Michigan middle class families. Gary helped write and pass the Small Business Jobs Act, which helped provide small businesses with the capital they needed to grow and create jobs. And he made sure the bill helped states like Michigan first.
Gary worked to find pragmatic solutions to address the challenges facing Michigan small businesses. That’s why he helped create the Small Business Lending Fund and the State Small Business Credit Initiative to help Michigan Main Street banks and credit unions provide small businesses with the loans they needed to start and grow their businesses. Already, these programs have helped create thousands of jobs and more are on the way.
According to a 2013 report, Michigan small businesses are partnering with Main Street banks to get the capital they need to grow and create jobs – thanks to Gary’s efforts. More than $277.1 million in increased lending has helped Michigan businesses weather the storm of the financial crisis, expand their operations, and create jobs.
Getting a small business off the ground can be difficult. Gary knows that we need to promote Michigan’s entrepreneurs if we’re going to succeed in continuing Michigan’s leadership in innovation. Gary serves as the Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and he helped author the STARTUP Act, a plan to encourage small business growth in Michigan.
With a proven track record as an independent voice for Michigan, our small businesses and middle class families can count on Gary to continue fighting for them in the U.S. Senate.
